And we are only halfway through the calendar year! While we still have plenty of new opportunities extend to the movie house too for the next five months, 2018 has already been a formidable year for moviegoing, one with a near endless array of celluloid and digital worlds to traverse. For that very reason, we have assembled what at this early date look like the must see see movies from the incoming year of 2018. As the months pass, we will update this list accordingly, but in the meantime here are the dates that you may want to mark down on the calendar! Video of PADDINGTON 2 - Official Film Trailer International January 12 Paddington 2 is a feel-good masterpiece, a cinematic salve for the prejudice of our times. Vibrant and kind, it imagines a better world for all of us. Video of Annihilation 2018 - Teaser Trailer - Paramount Pictures February 23 Alex Garland has made a perceptive and sometimes ponderous tome for his second writing and directing feature after the masterful Ex Machina. Also more ambitious and epic in scope than Machina, Annihilation features a strong and wide ranging cast of curious and enigmatic women, including a tenacious Natalie Portman, trapped in an even more imposing mystery box. Yet this feels like it is on the wrong track. More artful and about the patient build-up to one bloody deed, as opposed to a satire of many, Thoroughbreds owes more to the era of Golden Age films that Amanda and Lily are always watching. Video of A Wrinkle in Time Official US Trailer March 9 In any context, A Wrinkle in Time is an empowering children's film and it very much is committed to being a children's film with weird, wonderful visuals quite unique from anything we've seen in family films before. In this context, however, A Wrinkle in Time is , a mythological statement from the biggest studio in the world, by way of Selma director Ava DuVernay, about how we all have value and deserve to be loved. Within the film, this message plays out in the journey to self-acceptance for one awkward adolescent named Meg Murry Storm Reid , but on a meta level, it plays out in all of the kids and adults around the world who are seeing people who look like them in one of the biggest movies of the year. With a modern soundtrack and a diverse cast, Love, Simon is the kind of movie many people wish they had growing up. Video of ISLE OF DOGS Official Trailer FOX Searchlight March 23 Wes Anderson is no stranger to animated mischief, so the droll voice behind The Fantastic Mr. Fox returning to the form with Isle of Dogs is very welcome, indeed. Video of Ready Player One Comic-Con Trailer 2018 Movieclips Trailers March 30 In many ways, Ready Player One is the culmination of the modern pop culture landscape and its soil-rich fields of nostalgia. As media creators continue to mine our past and collective, generational childhoods to entertain adults in the present and maybe indoctrinate their children , everything old is new again. So perhaps that is why it took one of the most revered maestros behind those cultural touchstones to not just make the Ready Player One movie, but to make it so well. Video of A Quiet Place 2018 - Official Trailer - Paramount Pictures A Quiet Place April 6 John Krasinski may be a self-described scaredy cat who never really considered himself a fan of horror films, but he has crafted a movie that may ironically be remembered as the loudest declaration yet that we are indeed living in a golden age of horror films. Video of You Were Never Really Here — Official Trailer Amazon Studios You Were Never Really Here April 6 Based on a novella by Jonathan Ames, You Were Never Really Here is adapted and directed by Lynne Ramsay, the Scottish filmmaker behind Ratcatcher 1999 , Morvern Callar 2002 and We Need to Talk About Kevin 2011 , whose movies mix almost unbearably brutal scenarios with moments of great beauty and transcendence. You Were Never Really Here continues that tradition with the story of Joe Joaquin Phoenix , a PTSD-addled former combat veteran and FBI agent who now works outside the law to track down and rescue young girls who have been kidnapped by sex trafficking rings. Read the Den of Geek SDCC 2018 Special Edition Magazine Here! Some of the action is still a bit hard to follow at times, but the brothers prove that they can shoot a spectacular interstellar adventure with the best of them. Video of DISOBEDIENCE Official Trailer In theaters April 27 Disobedience April 27 There is one word though that stuck in my head, all throughout the film and in the days after; natural. I felt I was watching life, and not actors portraying it. The three leads all excel in their performances, with Rachel McAdams truly showing what a great performance should be. Subtle and timid, you can feel the river rushing inside her as she never lets an over embellished look or emotion escape her face... Disobedience on its surface is a film about two women who finally learn to break free of what is expected of them by finding each other again. But at its core, it is a story about finding true freedom, and using it to finally understand real happiness, even if it means not getting what you want. It does what a sequel should do: it expands the world of the original, adds new characters to the mix, and--as unlikely as it sounds--develops the protagonist in interesting new ways. Video of Solo: A Star Wars Story Official Trailer May 25 Solo is not a bad film, just a relentlessly average one that has no reason to exist except as a money machine. But if this is the template for Star Wars movies and who knows what the nostalgia-bewitched J. Abrams has in store for Episode IX , we might be in for a mundane couple of decades of storytelling. Video of Upgrade Trailer 1 2018 Movieclips Trailers Upgrade June 1 Such is the pulpy and generally amusing conceit of Upgrade, a science fiction film from Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse Productions. The film is not nearly as smart as it could have been, or even seems to think it is, yet it still makes for an enjoyable B-movie, right down to its questionable acting and wholly unconvincing science. Bullock and Blanchett easily carry much of the film, and Mindy Kaling got some of the best laughs. Her combination with frequent-scene partner Helena Bonham Carter was an unexpected joy, with HBC more or less playing the straight man, for once, and with an occasional Irish brogue. Meanwhile, Hathaway was delightful as their mark, vamping it up as an exaggerated version of the worst interpretation of her public persona. Like other assured filmmakers who work in the genre, Aster understands that horror works best as metaphor, and that the story and characters must function successfully on their own if the supernatural trappings are removed from the plot. Which is pretty darn super, indeed. Video of Three Identical Strangers Trailer 1 2018 Movieclips Indie Three Identical Strangers June 29 A deceptively giddy and exciting documentary, Three Identical Strangers is a film that plays all the better with the less you know about it. With a lurid conspiracy at the heart of their separation at birth, which leads to sometimes tragic and sometimes heartfelt consequences as the decades pass and the 1980s news media loses interest, here is one of the most surprising and engrossing docs in this year or any other. Video of Woman Walks Ahead Official Trailer HD A24 Woman Walks Ahead June 29 With a deft hand and a large reserve of ambition, director Susanna White mounts a very elegiac vision with Woman , one in which she and star Jessica Chastain contribute to the growing subgenre of deconstructionist oaters. While some have argued Woman Walks Ahead is a white savior movie, the sorrowful awareness of the film is that it knows all too well about its privilege, and the pain such good intentions can still inflict from 1890 to 2018. This aesthetical rope-a-dope is apparent from the very first scene in which Lakeith Stanfield sits in an office ready to charm his way into a telemarketing job. Luckily the white employer conducting the interview sees such flexibility with the truth as perfect prerequisites for a career in salesmanship. Adapted from an Emily M. Danforth novel of the same name, it takes a narrower and more sharply pointed, 90-minute route than the lengthy source. As such his film is angry, disparate, and for the first time in ages for the filmmaker, unconcerned with making its conflicting emotions congeal. Video of The Happytime Murders Red Band Trailer 1 2018 Movieclips Trailers August 24 This looks like an odd one: directed by Brian Henson, The Happytime Murders takes place in a world where puppets and humans co-exist and puppets are second-class citizens—with one, a detective, hot on the trail of a killer who is knocking off the cast members from a famous 1980s TV series until he is implicated in the murders himself. Think something like Who Killed Roger Rabbit? The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Bill Barretta, Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale, and Elizabeth Banks. This could be cult classic in the making… or not. Video of THE SISTERS BROTHERS Official Trailer 2018 Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix Movie HD September 21 What do you get when you have A Prophet's Jacques Audiard direct and co-write a dirt-beneath-your-fingernails Western? But what about you cast as his familial bandits with a deceptively gentle surname actors like Jake Gyellenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, and John C. Reilly, alongside Riz Ahmed as their mark? A contender for one of the best movies of the year if everything goes according to plan... A period piece set in 1952, the film is being directed by Corin Hardy, who made his debut in 2015 with the eerie and bleak The Hallow. The other Conjuring spinoffs—namely the two Annabelle movies—have varied in quality, so it remains to be seen whether Wan and his stable of filmmakers can turn this into an authentic shared universe whoever is still sitting in the Dark Universe offices must be feeling pangs of jealousy, however. When it comes to horror, we never count Wan out even as he himself is toiling on Aquaman , so hopefully we can give The Nun our blessing this fall. Well, that time has come, but all we know about The Predator is that it takes place sometime in between Predator 2 and the underrated Predators , and that it stars Boyd Holbrook Logan , Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Jane. From this director, expect lots of weird humor and male bonding, in addition to gutcrunching violence and lots of Predator action. Video of A STAR IS BORN - Official Trailer 1 October 5 This is the fourth version of this venerable story—following films in 1937, 1954, and 1976—but this one has had an especially long and tortured path to the screen. Back in 2011, it was announced that Clint Eastwood was going to direct Beyonce in the movie, but that eventually morphed into Lady Gaga taking the pivotal role of rising star Ally alongside Bradley Cooper, who is now making his directorial debut on the film. The rest of the cast includes Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay, and Dave Chappelle. Can Lady Gaga who is being billed under her real name, Stefani Germanotta prove herself to be a real actor? Video of First Man - Official Trailer HD October 12 Oscar winning director Damien Chazelle leaves behind the musical backdrop of Whiplash and La La Land to tell the story of Neil Armstrong, the first human being to walk on the Moon. Video of Serenity Trailer 1 2018 Movieclips Trailers Serenity October 19 While the title is perhaps a bit misjudged, at least in online social media circles, we are always up for some neo noir, and Serenity looks like it could be an especially delicious sun-baked slice of nihilism. From Steven Knight, the screenwriter of Eastern Promises and the writer-director of Locke, comes what has the makings of a particularly twisted story. How can it not be, after opening on a blonde bombshell fatale walking into a bar to yank the chain of her old flame? She has a simple request: take her abusive husband out on his boat and leave him for the sharks. Yet looks can be deceiving, especially in a film that is obviously liberally pulling inspiration from films like Double Indemnity, Body Heat, and even T o Have and Have Not. Plus, it features an Interstellar reunion of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, albeit their concerns are much more now the stuff of earth and the bllood that spills on it here. Video of Halloween - Official Trailer HD October 19 Third time's the charm, right? Indeed, Halloween circa 2018 will mark the third time someone has attempted to reboot--softly or strongly--John Carpenter's 1978 classic from 30 years ago. In 1998, we got H20: 20 Years Later, which like the title suggests followed the hijinks of Michael Myers chasing his now adult, baby sister Laurie Strode Jamie Lee Curtis in a sequel that ignored much that came between it and the '78 classic. Soon afterward came a remake in 2007 that was directed by Rob Zombie. Now in 2018, we get yet another film that ignores Zombie's remake and seemingly H20 and everything else, with Jamie Lee Curtis again being terrorized by the Man in the Bill Shatner Mask. So why are we optimistic? Mostly because David Gordon Green The Pineapple Express, Snow Angels is directing from a script he co-wrote with Danny McBride. What the hell, let them take another stab at it! Video of Suspiria - Teaser Trailer Amazon Studios November 2 Remaking a classic like Dario Argento's Suspiria would normally be sacrilege. And maybe it is? Yet we are willing to give Luca Guadagnino a shot. The filmmaker who directed the delightful A Big Splash and the masterfully heartbreaking Call Me by Your Name is getting his weird on with what appears to be an artful and genuinely creative reimagining of Argento's story in a now hellish company of world-renowned dancers. The film also impressively stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Chloe Grace Moretz. The second film for Joel Edgerton as a director and co-writer, Boy Erased has an eye on the awards circuit with a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and an all-star cast that includes Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Edgerton himself. Bryan Singer's sudden departure from the film, as well as seeing how Mr. Robot star Rami Malek reaches for the high note, makes this one to keep an eye on. Video of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Official Comic-Con Trailer November 16 The saga of Harry Potter prequels continues with this Fantastic Beasts sequel. When its predecessor dropped in 2016, screenwriter and literary giant J. Rowling felt like she was sincerely grappling with a fear of creeping rightward nationalism and fascism. In the time since that movie came out, the world has caught up or fallen back with? The movie will also feature the return of fan favorites like Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Dan Folger as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie, and Katherine Waterston as Tina. Plus, Jude Law is making his grand debut as a young Dumbledore. So there should be plenty of magic of the fantastic variety too. But instead of planning just a funeral, these women plan to write a better future by finishing the heist. Video of THE FAVOURITE Teaser Trailer FOX Searchlight The Favourite November 23 While technically a period piece biographical film, we imagine that only defines Yorgos Lanthimos' newest English language film in the loosest sense. After helming expectation-benders like The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Lanthimos' trip to 18th century England is not likely to be a film of formalities. Focused on the court of Queen Anne Olivia Colman and how it is thrown upside down with the introduction of a new servant played by Emma Stone--a woman who most beguiles Anne's sister, Sarah Churchill Rachel Weisz --we imagine The Favourite to be every bit as playful and surprising as its already vaguely demented trailer. He long ago abandoned that idea as Avatar took over his life, but stuck resolutely with the property. Video of Aquaman - Official Trailer 1 December 21 The DC Extended Universe had a bipolar year in 2017. While Wonder Woman is widely considered one of the best superhero movies ever made, that Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot slam dunk was followed up by the less than successful Justice League. But you live, you learn, and then you try again. And by the looks of things, Aquaman may have just carefully studied the lessons of that doubleheader, as the Jason Momoa underwater vehicle appears to be as much its own standalone beast as Wonder Woman was removed from Batman v Superman. Cheney December 21 Christian Bale is playing Dick Cheney. Promising to be the antithesis of standard biopic boilerplate, this combo is irresistible. December 21 While throwing a Will Ferrell comedy in here is always a risk, the fact that he is reteaming with John C. For in an era where everyone and their broadcasting mother has a copyright-free Sherlock Holmes television series or movie franchise making the rounds, here is one that really reinvents the wheel: what if Holmes Ferrell was an idiot taking all the credit for his fair Watson Reilly? Video of Mary Poppins Returns Official Teaser Trailer December 25 Recasting belated sequels to beloved classics is tough business. Yet here we are, and obviously The Irishman is one of the most exciting projects of 2018 by that fact alone. Oh, and Hoffa is played by Al Pacino in his first Scorsese movie ever. If the news was any better, you might accuse me of being a funny guy. Hold the Dark TBA 2018 Speaking of Netflix and capped feathers, director Jeremy Saulner is also making his next feature with the streaming giant. Saulner is well known in genre circles for helming Blue Ruin and Green Room, and his latest film promises to push just as many buttons. Hold the Dark redraws the familiar tension of a ticking clock of missing children while adding a stark addition: the wilderness. A Vigilante TBA 2018 : There is something tired about the vigilante fantasy, that often masculine and oh, so American dream of rugged individualism aggressively exercising its Second Amendment rights to act mighty. In the 1970s, it might have felt like a cynical escape from helplessness, but today it often resembles a delusion clung to by those who refuse to help their fellow man—or woman. Not only does first-time writer and director Daggar-Nickson reimagine a reductive reverie into one of harrowing, feminine empowerment, but she does so in a way that is wary of violence, even while using it to defang the type of toxic masculinity that has long wallowed in all those Death Wish sequels. By fixating on a captivating and utterly ferocious turn by Olivia Wilde as a woman who tries to do to abusers in a single visit what they do to their wives and children over a lifetime, there is an intimate sorrow and authenticity to the film that intentionally deflates any attempts at popcorn thrills. Instead it finds something rawer and more challenging, especially when the limbs actually start to snap, and the fantasy of revenge stops feeling so abstract.
